    From 1969 to 1971, then Major General William Desobry served as the Commanding General of the 1st Armored Division at Fort Hood. He retired from the United States Army in 1975 as a Lieutenant General after 34 years of service. Desobry died in San Antonio on January 12, 1996. He is buried at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
