This government film looks back at the history of Fort Hood in honor of its 50th anniversary. In addition to detailing how Fort Hood contributed to military operations from World War II to Operation Desert Storm, the film also features home movie footage of the base from the 1940s, narrated by the soldier who operated the camera. An overview of the many commands and brigades that once did or still call Fort Hood home is also included.

My dad was Killeen Base commander in 1951 when I graduated from Ft. Hood Elementary School and my oldest sister Pat graduated from Fort Hood High School. My dad, Col. T.R. Hikel. went to Air Material Command at Wright-Patterson AFB and then ended his career as Chair of the Joint Armed Services Explosive Board in the Pentagon. Dad served as the Chair of the Ft. Hood School Board. I remember the two theaters that stood side by side especially the new one with cushioned seats. Killeen, as I remember was only a small town. We had to go to Temple or Waco to shop for clothes. It is hard to believe that Killeen is now over 100,000.
