Internships

Applications are accepted year-round for internships at the Texas Archive of the Moving Image. TAMI's internships are primarily conducted on-site at TAMI's offices in Austin, Texas. 

All experiences are unpaid except for the AMIA Pathways Fellowship. This program funds a summer internship for individuals from groups historically underrepresented in the profession at any level of their career and includes a curriculum, mentorship opportunities, and more. Applicants for the AMIA Pathways internship must complete two applications by April 15: one with TAMI and one with AMIA. Learn more HERE.

Description of Project Opportunities:

  • Digitization Intern (In-person) - Intern will assist with all phases of the Texas Archive of the Moving Image's film and videotape digitization process, from preparation to digitization under the supervision of TAMI's technical director. Training on specific procedures, equipment, and software will be provided, prior film-handling experience or experience with video formats is encouraged but not required. 
  • Cataloging Intern (In-person or remote) - Intern will catalog and assist in curating selected videos for inclusion in the Texas Archive of the Moving Image collection at www.texasarchive.org. The intern will be assigned video collections from the archive, which include industrial and corporate productions, home movies, advertisements, local television, and amateur films under the supervision of TAMI's curator. The intern will conduct significant research and cataloging of a specific video collection and then create and implement a curatorial plan for the collection. 
  • Inventory and Assessment Intern (In-person) - Intern will inventory materials into the TAMI database, transcribe item metadata from original objects, evaluate collections to determine their suitability for inclusion in the archive, and aid in prioritizing collections for preservation under the supervision of TAMI's operations manager.
  • Social Media Intern (In-person) - Intern will create content for TAMI’s social media channels. Ideal candidate will have experience with Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Can you take our channels to the next level? Identify trends and use TAMI's archival film and video to engage new followers. This position is under the supervision of TAMI's communications manager. Basic video editing skills and knowledge of Canva and Premiere Pro a big plus. 
  • Metadata Intern (In-person or remote) - Intern will work directly with TAMI’s curator and technical director to keyword news footage from our KPRC collection with the names of significant people, places, historical events, and more. Interns will research news segments and create appropriate metadata and descriptions.
  • Education Intern (In-person or remote) - Intern will assist TAMI's managing director and communications manager in creating and promoting educator materials, including lesson plans, activities, worksheets, and other resources addressing state and national K-12 standards. Intern will also develop emails and social media posts to promote materials and engage educators with TAMI content. 

Capstone projects are available for Information and Library Science students seeking a professional project. Potential topics include website usability, online exhibit development and design, and collections assessment.

Eligibility/Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Intern must commit to full semester internship; Digitization interns must commit to a total of 300 hours or two semesters
  • Interest and/or background in archives/libraries/museums, history, education, and/or media
  • All positions benefit from candidates who are responsible, detail-oriented, and self-directed
  • Knowledge of Texas history is helpful

About the Texas Archive of the Moving Image

Founded in 2002, Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization working to discover, preserve, provide access to, and educate the community about Texas’ film heritage. TAMI partners with the Office of the Governor’s Texas Film Commission to administer the Texas Film Round-Up program, which provides free digitization for Texas-related films and videotapes, online access to a selection of the contributed materials, and statewide public programming, as well as creates educator resources using these newly digitized Texas media in the classroom.
