In this 1998 home movie, Valerie Ramirez interviews one of Jacob White’s brothers about his family’s history in South Texas for a video presentation intended for a nearby high school. He shares stories of how his gambling helped his family purchase their land, family funerals held at Restlawn Cemetery, and the death of his brother Luther. Their father J.D. White, a deacon at the Lily of the Valley Baptist Church, and mother Maude White, were well-known and respected members of the Black community in Hidalgo County. One of their sons, Jacob White, served in World War II and died during training in 1945. The former Edinburg American Legion Post #884 was named in honor of him and served the Black World War II veteran community from 1947 to 1959.
