The Tim White Collection

This 1971 home movie captures members of the White family visiting Banff National Park and Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada. After a scenic drive through the Canadian Rockies, they hike across glaciers and nature trails. Along the way, they encounter wildlife like elk, mountain goats, chipmunks, and black bears.


NASA sponsored the trip to collect ground truth, or verify the scientific accuracy of satellite images, for the Apollo 17 Surface Electrical Properties Experiment. Dr. R. Baker conducted the test on the Athabasca glacier in Jasper National Park with support from Johnson Space Center personnel. In the process of collectin ground truth, the test also discovered an error in the flight hardware that was corrected before the experiment successfully flew on Apollo 17.

This was not a family trip but a NASA sponsored trip to collect ground truth for the Apollo 17 Surface Electrical Properties (SEP) Experiment (PI, Dr. Gene Simmons/MIT). The test was conducted on the Athabasca glacier (Jasper National Park) by Dr. R. Baker, (CSR/MIT) with data analysis support from NASA/JSC personnel. The test did provide necessary science ground truth. but also discovered an error in the flight hardware that was corrected before the experiment flew successfully on Apollo 17.
