The Texas Birthday Parade (1986)
Categories:
Produced by the Austin Sesquicentennial Commission, this television coverage hosted by Susan Howard, Johnny Rodriguez, and Tonia Cooke documents a massive parade down Austin’s Congress Avenue on March 2, 1986, to celebrate the state’s 150th anniversary. The 150 parade entries include floats and beauty queens from across the state, Texas politicians past and present, horses, clowns, classic cars, and antique bicycles. And, of course, what parade would be complete without marching bands? The ethnic diversity of Texas is on display with entries from the Austin Chinese Association, the Ukranian-American Cultural Club of Houston, and a group of escaramuza charra side saddle riders. Finally, don’t miss the “Have a Big Time in Texas” musical tourism ad!
