Established in 1957 to promote Black western heritage, Prairie View Houston is one of the oldest trail rides associated with the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The tradition continues to this day, with travelers riding from Hempstead, roughly 86 miles, in wagons or on horseback each February. A reported 250 riders participated in the 1989 ride.
