515 16 Dyke  Simmons 04/07/69: Closer look at Dyke Askew Simmons imprisoned in Monterrey, Mexico

Interview with Dyke Askew Simmons and his escape attempt from prison in Mexico. He was shot in the leg before being able to escape, but he was rescued by another prisoner, Dr. Treviño, who was committed for murder. Journalist and author Thomas Harris was sent to Monterrey prison to interview Dyke Simmons about his arrest and escape attempt from the prison and met Dr. Treviño as well. Later on, Dr. Treviño would serve as inspiration for Dr. Hannibal Lecter in Harris’ best-selling novel The Silence of the Lambs.

Liquor By Drink, 04/16/69: Liquor-by-the-drink bill fails to pass in the Texas House of Representatives with five votes short of the majority needed to pass. The liquor-by-drink bill would allow the sale of mixed alcoholic beverages in restaurants and bars. Several representatives abstained from voting including Texas Representative Curtis Graves in an effort to help push forward legislation that was stuck in subcommittees. Despite the failure to pass the bill, Representative Cletus Davis was pleased with the results at the prospect of the bill going to a general election. Liquor-by-drink would not be completely legalized until 1971, when the legislature responded to a public referendum by creating a mixed beverage permit authorized on a local-option basis.
