This home movie captures the Texas School for the Deaf Winter Ball at Austin's Chaparral Ice on February 25, 1995. Students skate (and occasionally tumble) around the rink, even trying their luck with a game of limbo. Near the conclusion, a coronation ceremony is held for the crowning of the Winter Ball court. Chaparral Ice, the rink inside Austin's Northcross Mall, was new to the area at the time of filming and has remained a fixture for almost 30 years since.
Located in Austin, the Texas School for the Deaf is both a statewide and national leader in deaf education. The school first opened its doors in 1857 with only four male students. In 2009, the school housed over 500 students on campus, with many others in summer and short programs. TSD also offers outreach programs to families of students with hearing disabilities outside the Austin area.
