On June 19, 1986, KERA-TV, the public broadcasting station for Dallas-Fort Worth-Denton, broadcast an hour-long documentary on Black politics in Texas, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Bob Ray Sanders. The documentary begins by examining the relationship between political activism and the Black church, with profiles of several Texas ministers. It then follows three Black candidates running for Texas State Senator: Jesse Oliver, Jesse Jones, and Eddie Bernice Johnson. The issue of poverty in Black communities is illustrated by Houston’s Fifth Ward, represented in US Congress by Mickey Leland. Editing creates a conversation between residents of the district, demanding change, and Leland, proclaiming his dedication to his constituents. Attention then turns to the rise in teen pregnancy and questions of economic class, with members of the Forest Hill City Council discussing the issues that face their middle-class suburb. The documentary concludes with reflections on the perceived political apathy within Texas’ Black communities. Bob Ray Sanders then moderates a debate on the topics raised in the film with Clarence M. Pendleton Jr., the chairman of the United States Commission on Civil Rights; Althea T.L. Simmons, director of the Washington bureau of the NAACP; Craig Washington, Texas State Senator; and Willie Brown, Speaker of the California Assembly.
