Produced by DLJ Studios, this 2001 video compilation combines Kempner family home movies with commentary from Leonora “Nonie” Kempner Thompson and Lyda Kempner Quinn. Quinn’s daughter, Lyda Ann Thomas guides the program. Thomas was a member of the Galveston City Council at the time. She would later go on to serve as mayor of from 2004 to 2010. The home movie footage dates from the 1930s to the 1950s, and includes scenes from holiday gatherings and vacations as well as special occasions like President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s visit to Galveston in 1937 and Mary Jean Kempner performing for March of Time radio broadcasts. One of Galveston’s most prominent families, the Kempners primarily made their fortune through ventures in banking and cotton. The family later partnered with William T. Eldridge to found the Imperial Sugar Company, becoming the sole owners in 1946. The Kempners established the Harris and Eliza Kempner Fund the same year. The private foundation supports the family’s philanthropic efforts, primarily working with projects in the greater Galveston area.
