This 1961 home movie captures a family vacation to Havana, Cuba. First, the family tours Morro Castle, the fortress guarding the entrance to Havana Bay. Then, they head to the beach for people-watching and sunbathing. It is interesting that Americans would be traveling to Cuba in the early 1960s, given the tense relations between the two countries. The United States imposed a range of sanctions on Cuba between 1960 and 1964, eventually enforcing a complete trade embargo. While we do not know when in 1961 this trip took place, it is reasonable to assume that it happened in the summertime, just a few months after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in April of that year.
