This feature film is a B-movie Western directed by Joseph Kane. Released in 1943, King of the Cowboys stars Roy Rogers, as well as Smiley Burnette, Peggy Moran, Gerald Mohr, and Russell Hicks. Admiring Rogers' style, the governor of Texas enlists the singing cowboy to go undercover and bring down a sabotage ring that is blowing up government warehouses across the state during World War II. Rogers performs several musical numbers during the film, including "A Gay Ranchero" and "Roll Along Prairie Moon." Bob Nolan and his western singing group, Sons of the Pioneers, are also featured in the film.
