Geraldine "Jerri" Sloan Truhill was one of the "Mercury 13," a group of women who in 1960 underwent and passed same the astronaut fitness examinations given to the Mercury Seven men.  The privately-funded program was developed by William Randolph Lovelace II, the researcher who had performed the original tests for NASA and wanted to know how women would respond. All of the women were accomplished pilots who met a stringent set of criteria, including having a minimum of 2,000 hours of flight time.  For more information about the program and about Jerri Truhill, please see www.mercury13.com
