Originally called the Alamo Brewing Company of San Antonio, the Lone Star Brewing Company was founded by Adolphus Busch, of Anheuser-Busch, and a group of San Antonio businessmen in 1874. Its brewery, built in 1884, was the first large, mechanized brewery in Texas. (The location in downtown San Antonio now houses the San Antonio Museum of Art. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.) While the original Lone Star Bottling Works opened in the 1890s, the company did not begin officially producing Lone Star Beer until 1940, when German brewer Peter Kreil created the formula. While the company has passed through several hands since its founding, it is currently owned by the Pabst Brewing Company. Production of Lone Star is currently contracted out to non-Pabst own breweries, including the Miller Brewing Company in Fort Worth.
