In 1908, the first turkey dressing house opened in Cuero, Texas and that year farmers from DeWitt County farms began herding hundreds of turkeys through the city streets to the packing house. As the years progressed, more and more citizens of Cuero became fascinated by the comical scene of mobs of turkeys being led through the streets, and the Cuero Turkey Trot, and later Turkeyfest, was born. The Cuero Turkeyfest is still held every year during the second weekend of October and now consists of a variety of events, including the "Great Gobbler Gallop", a turkey race between the cities of Worthington, Minnesota, and Cuero, Texas.
